Laidback but still stylish. Chic and casual. These are some of the trends you’ll be seeing a lot of this fall. Serving as a reflection of the times we're living in, the fashion world is encouraging us to embrace individuality and dare us to be different. Some of this year’s buzzwords? Unconventional, and a little off the beaten path. Mix together different prints, textures, colours, shapes, and sizes for a totally fresh and unique look.
Keep it cozy
Once the temperature drops, the urge to cocoon becomes (admittedly) hard to resist. Colder days call for zipping into cozy, quilted jackets and parkas. But that doesn’t mean these can’t look great either. Make your outwear work for you by draping a quilted jacket over some snug jeans or a tailored suit. An equally chic choice is an oversized parka, the perfect blend of style and comfort. Not only is a parka practical come wintertime, but when it’s worn well, it's sure to get you noticed.
Seen on the Gucci, Armani, Givenchy, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors runways, faux fur is a trend with serious traction—and it’s easy to see why. It’s ethical and versatile, so you can clear your conscience and look put-together doing it. You’ll find fake fur on all of this season’s staples, including coats and shoes as well as favourite cold-weather accessories like scarves and hats. Why not go big? Give your outerwear an update in an all-over fake fur coat or unleash your inner animal with faux fur options dyed in vibrant pinks, blues, and yellows.
Leopard and tartan
Sometimes called the Prince of Wales or glen check, preppy tartan is a popular print gracing so many different styles. You’re going to be seeing a lot of it, as it’s popping up on pieces like tailored suits, seasonal blazers, pants, and skirts. Reinvent this Scottish classic by donning plaid in bold, bright colours—we’re loving red, yellow, orange, or blue. Yet another print seen everywhere is leopard, a perennial favourite emerging once more as a major trend. This season, though, it’s being used more conservatively: find it adorning the trim of thigh-high boots, on tailored jackets, blouses with shoulder pads, or even playfully on acetate glasses—an eye-catching way to stand out.
